Using menthol and L-lactic acid as raw materials, L-lactate menthol was obtained by using cyclohexane with water, esterification and refining. The effects of reaction time, molar ratio of alcohol to acid and catalytic dosage on the reaction were studied. The preferential process conditions determined were :n(menthol):n(L-lactic acid)=1.2:1.0. The catalyst was 2% of the total weight of the raw materials. Cyclohexane was heated and rereflux with water for the reaction 6 hours, vacuum distillation to 120ºC/400 Pa. The residue was recrystallized to obtain white needle-like crystalline products with a yield of over 80% and a purity of 99%.
