Introduction:
Physical and chemical properties
Appearance: usually colorless to light yellow liquid.
Melting point: below -100ºC.
Boiling point: about 155 - 156ºC.
Density: about 1.006 g/mL (25ºC).
Solubility: slightly soluble in water, soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene, etc.
Chemical properties
2,3-Butanedithiol contains two thiol groups (-SH) in the molecule, which make it have strong reducing and nucleophilic properties. It can react with many metal ions to form stable metal complexes. In the air, the thiol group is easily oxidized to form disulfide. In addition, it can also react with some electrophilic reagents, and the hydrogen atoms in the thiol group are replaced by other groups.

Application:
Organic synthesis: As a thiol reagent, it introduces thiol groups and participates in cyclization reactions to construct sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds.
Materials science: As a functional additive, it modifies polymers to improve their performance; it can also be used to prepare organic semiconductor materials for the manufacture of optoelectronic devices.
Metal surface treatment: As a metal corrosion inhibitor, it inhibits metal corrosion; as a surface modifier, it changes the surface properties of metals and improves their hydrophilicity, wear resistance, and biocompatibility.
